I started
making knives about 1975 when my brother-in-law was raising
pigs and we needed a knife that would hold an edge and work well when
skinning the pigs. Our first try was a ulu style and worked out well. I
made some more and showed them to friends. They liked them and I was
hooked on knifemaking. I sold my first knife in 1977. I was a part time
knifemaker untill 2003 when I retired from the HVAC trade.
I like to make Custom designed knives and have quite a few standard
designs to work from. I use mostly D-2 tool steel and 440C. I flat grind
the knives that I make and use no jigs. I use mostly stabilized wood,
horn, antler and bone for handle material but I also have diamond wood
and micartas. All my knives are serial numbered so they can be traced if
stolen or lost.
I do my own heat treating and have a hardness tester. I make my own
leather sheaths and they are wet formed to the knife and serial numbered
with the knife.
