Philip comes to knifemaking through the fine arts.
He is an award winning painter, printmaker and
knifemaker, working in the mediums of oil painting
and etching. At 10 years old he made his first knife
by hammering a 16 penny spike and wrapping the
handle with tape. Not much of a knife but at 10
years, a huge accomplishment. Philip sold his first
knife in 1991 and is now a voting member of The
Knifemakers' Guild.
Working as a full time
knifemaker for six years,
Philip is now back to
part time making. The local hardware store needed
part time help and he just seemed to fit right in.
Now working three days per week in the shop and
three at the store makes for a better balance. The
knifemaker likes being able to work at a slower
pace, it is better for the art and Art is what
reason for doing this.
Philips speciality
knives are the little automatics pictured here.
They are part of an on going series of small folding
knives. The pattern has changed every year, since
1996. Not all are automatic, but the most popular
are. However, he likes to make the occasional Bowie
or Dagger, just for the change of pace.
