The PKA is an
incorporated, nonprofit, professional association with dues-paying members
throughout the world. Officers and directors are elected at each annual
business meeting, usually in August of each year coinciding with the PKA's
annual knife show. In addition to its board of directors, the PKA also
includes several committees focused on matters ranging from membership
growth to education to legislative affairs to ethical standards.
While the PKA was originally organized by and for the full-time
professional knifemaker, in 1998 it was recognized that many of today's
finest makers are able to work at their craft only part-time and were
welcomed into the PKA as voting members. In 1999, it was further
recognized that custom knife purveyors, suppliers of knifemaking supplies
and tools, engravers, scrimshanders, and others who's principle business
is focused on servicing the needs of custom knifemakers are also a vital
part of professional knifemaking. Today, full voting membership is
extended to include all of the strategic alliances that comprise the world
of professional knifemaking.
The primary requisite for all members
of the PKA is to have achieved highest possible level of professionalism
in their craft or service.
Further, it is the responsibility of
all PKA members to encourage and support the business interests of the
membership. Thus PKA members give preferential consideration to other
members when buying services and supplies and in recommending the products
and services of other PKA members.
